Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s new film at the San Sebastian Film Festival Competition

A Dark-Dark Man” feature by Adilkhan Yerzhanov will take part in the main competition program of the 67th San Sebastian International Film Festival, which will be held from September 20 to 28, 2019. This will be the world premiere of the film created by Astana Film Find with the participation of Short Brothers and Arizona Productions.

A Dark-Dark Man” tells the story of a detective Bekzat (Daniyar Alshinov) who investigates a case of a child murder. He wants to close the case as soon as possible because the local policemen have already found a crime perpetrator - a harmless local moron Pukuar (Teoman Khos).  But when a journalist Ariana (Dinara Baktybayeva) comes from the city, everything falls apart. Now Bekzat must conduct a real investigation, following procedure, for the first time in his career.

Daniyar Alshinov and Dinara Baktybayeva also starred in Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s new film “Atbay’s Fight”, which is now in the production stage. Dinara Baktybayeva also performed the main female role in the film “The Gentle Indifference of the World”. Teoman Khos starred in most of the director’s films.

As a reminder, last year “A Dark-Dark Man” (working title “Kuandyk”) won the pitching of projects at the Almaty Film Festival and received a launch from Astana Film Fund. The general producers of the film are Akan Satayev and Ernar Kurmashev.

Adilkhan Yerzhanov worked on the script with Roelof Jan Minneboo. Olga Khlasheva, a producer on international promotion, and Serik Abishev, an executive producer, both have been cooperating with Yerzhanov for a long time. The DoP is Aydar Sharipov, who had previously worked with the director on the film “The Gentle Indifference of the World”. The art director is a permanent member of Adilkhan’s team Yermek Utegenov, who worked with the director on his 7 films. The film music was created by a famous musician Galymzhan Moldanazar.

- This film is about a protagonist, who changes and becomes a man. A classic story, which has already been told many times. But it is always interesting, so it excites me. This is a kind of anti-detective. The main thing here is not who committed the murder, but how the protagonist solves his internal conflict,” - said Adilkhan Yerzhanov.

The San Sebastian International Film Festival is one of the oldest A-Class film festivals in the world (along with Cannes, Berlin and Venice).
